Bikol Region is in the southern part of Luzon of the Philippines. It is composed of six provinces, namely: Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon and Masbate.

The name Bikol, according to Espinas (1996), might be a corruption of the word bikal which is a kind of bamboo or a derivative of milodbikod or bikod, translated as "bent or twisted," which is an adjective describing what is today known as the Bikol River.

Generally referred to as Bikol, there actually exist several languages used in the different provinces.  A record of  Bikol words,  first published in 1754, was created by Marcos de Lisboa.
